About us

The Institute of Jewish Rock was founded by Cantor Abbie Strauss. After many years of working in synagogue life, Cantor Abbie has created her dream for Jewish life. She believes that music IS community. As a Jewish leader, spouse, and mom, she has witnessed the power that music has in people’s lives. Now, for the first time, she has created a new vision that blends her love for teaching, leadership, and building community - through music!

Cantor Abbie and her husband, Rabbi Feivel Strauss, are the proud parents of three children and are passionate about music. Cantor Abbie was certified via the Cantor’s Assembly of the Conservative Movement, performs at Jewish gatherings all over the world, and is a mentor to aspiring cantors and song-leaders.

Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Abbie was raised in a home that was committed to Judaism and music. While in high school and college, Abbie was drawn to leading Jewish prayer and the strength of community. She is a sought after recording artist and has collaborated with Rick Recht, Michael Hunter Ochs, and Neshama Carlebach, and produced over six albums on all streaming platforms..
